Project Algorithm Burnout

A Documentary Series · Part 1 of 3

In the summer of 2025, James John Buzzacco and his production crew descended on the streets of downtown New York City with cameras rolling and one question nobody was ready for. The cast was chosen across a spectrum — business owners, creatives, influencers, professionals — because what they captured crosses every industry, every ambition, every definition of success.

On the rawest corners of downtown Manhattan, surrounded by the noise and velocity of a city that never stops optimizing, Buzzacco and his crew captured what happens when you ask people to stop performing and start telling the truth.

Then the conversation moved indoors. In an intimate studio setting, James sat down one-on-one with participants for a deeper examination — peeling back the layers of mechanical thinking, identity displacement, and the growing distance between who we project and who we actually are. What emerged was raw and deeply personal — the kind of honesty that only surfaces when someone finally feels safe enough to say what they've been thinking for years but never had the language for.

Voices from the film.

Real people. Honest conversations. These are the words that surfaced when the camera started rolling and the performing stopped.

"People are just handing off the little power they have — which is their uniqueness. They're just handing it off, and this thing is spitting something back at them, and they're like, oh yeah, okay, I'll do that — because that probably gets me some likes."

Participant · Part 1

"The metrics keep telling you that who you are and what you really want to create just won't convert."

Participant · Part 1

"Now that I've become dependent on it, I don't even trust my own creativity anymore."

Participant · Part 1

"It doesn't outright steal your voice — but it slowly programs you to stop listening to it."

Participant · Part 1

"It's a scary thought to not really have control over your identity anymore — over your own creative mind and over your imagination."

Participant · Part 1

Three parts. Three countries. One question.

Each part takes the same question to a different corner of the world — exploring how the algorithm runs differently depending on the culture, the pressure, and the dreams people are chasing.

Filmed raw on the streets of New York City. The moment ordinary people begin to see the pattern for the first time — the realization that the algorithm isn't just in their phones. It's in how they think, how they measure themselves, how they chase, and how they've slowly stopped feeling like themselves in the process.

The series moves overseas — exploring how the same mechanical patterns show up in cultures with entirely different definitions of success, identity, and worth. Different pressure. Same algorithm. Different cities. Same question everyone is avoiding.

What does it look like to live with the algorithm still running around you — while no longer running it inside? The final part follows people who are building a different kind of life on the other side of the rupture.

The door.

At the center of the documentary is a single piece of performance art. Each participant was asked to walk through a physical door — leaving behind the noise, the conformity, and the identity they'd been performing.

On the other side: an infinite white space. No branding. No metrics. No audience. Just the person — unattached from the copy of themselves they'd been projecting to the world.

It was in that space, stripped of everything external, that the real conversations began.

Stepping out of the identity we're forced to perform — and into the infinite white space of nothingness, unattached to this copy of ourselves.

Director · Writer · Producer

James John Buzzacco spent his career on the other side of the camera — building brand identities at the highest levels of commercial storytelling. Through his studio Creative Doorway, he watched success become one of the most effective disguises for a life quietly coming apart.

This documentary is what happened when he took what he'd seen inside the studio and put it on the street — capturing a generation in the middle of a shift they haven't named yet.
